------------------------------------------------------------------------ WinSpell v 5.00 - Spell View for Windows (10/01/95), The Great Net Spell & Prayer Book and Psionic Book viewer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to WinSpell, the best (And probably the only :) mass spell/prayer/psionics viewer/printer for the PC & Compatibles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Hardware Requirement ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm afraid that SpellView requires quite a bit of hardware to work : 1. A 386 or better CPU will work just fine. 2a. A lot of memory! The windows version requires at least 3 more MB of RAM than the DOS version. Thus at least 8MB of Ram is required. 2b. A lot less memory if Indexed Viewing mode is used (See Below) - At least 4 MB RAM. 3. About 6 MB of Hard Disk space (Probably will take slightly less). 4. A somewhat VGA compatible card. 5. DOS v5.0+ or compatible recommended (older versions might work). 6. Windows 3.00 or better. 7. Microsoft mouse or compatible. 8. Fast hard disk for loading the spells/prayers (Recommended). 9. The Windows version must be run in 800x600 greater resolution, else the program will not work. The Windows version has been tested on Win 3.11, Win95 and OS2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Installing WinSpell ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run windows, and choose in the File menu - Add, and find the directory inwhich the program is. You can also use filemanager - simply drag the Winspell.exe file to one of your program groups, and run it from there. It is advisable, you place the .exe file with the .dat file and the DOS version, for easy use. when you are ready, simply run Winspell.exe. note: The windows version is completely compatible with the DOS version data file. However it cannot change or save it (this might be added in later versions). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Windows Only Version Specials... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. The Marking feature, that lets you save the mark index, and reload it at a later time. This enables you to keep spellbooks for your characters, or just a list of most wanted spells. 2. You can now open more then one spell at a time - double click the middle column in the spelllist, and get a small window with the spell's stats & description. You can then return to the spelllist, and form others in the same way. 3. Easy to use menus & icons - no need to remember keys anymore... 4. Graphic Style printing, using fonts, bold & italic to print the spells with their full description. 5. Use the toggle button on the bottom left of the status bar. So when it is down, pressing each one of the icons in the top row, that minimize or sort the list, the function works on the entire list. Otherwise, the function works on the already minimized list. 6. Faster ways to find files for loading & saving, using the file list boxes... and finally... 7. You can always leave the program for a second, and do whatever you like. For example running are forecoming Item or Monster viewers... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Working with WinSpell ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Opening Window **************** When you run WinSpell, you will first get an opening screen, click on it with the mouse or press enter to continue. * Loading Window **************** The next screen you will get is the loading window, either press ok to load the spell.dat which is in the directory of the program file or choose browse to look for another file. Choose cancel to exit the program. Check the Index View checkbox to load the datafile in index view mode. (saving alot of memory). However, this way, you will not be able to search the spell descriptions for a string. Check the Spell/Power types checkboxes to load only spells of those types. The program will only load spells of teh selected types. * Spell List Window ******************* The table, shows the spell names & level. The Left Column, shows if a spell is marked or not. Double Clicking on it, will mark a spell or unmark it. The Middle Column shows the level of the spell. C = Cantrip D = Devotion S = Science I = Info 1-10 = Levels. The Right Column, shows the spell name. Spells in Italic, are reversible. Each spell has a color according to its type: Wizard Spells: Blue Priest Prayers: Green Psionic Powers: Red Double Clicking the Middle or Right Columns will show the mini-spell windows, which shows the Spell's stats & description, and will not change (you can minimize it, or close it using the ALT-F4 or the close icons). Scroll Bar: the scroll bar, can be moved either using the mouse or the keyboard. Note that the quickinfo (Middle right side of the window) shows quick information about the spell, the bar is currently on. Pressing any LETTER key while on the spell list, will bring the cursor to the first spell, whose first letter starts with . For example, if you press , while on the spell list, the scrollbar will move to the first spell, whose name starts with a "B". Pressing NUMBER key while on the spell list, will bring the cursor to the first spell, whose level is that of . (0 = Cantrip). For example, if you press <2>, while on the spell list, the scrollbar will move to the first spell, whose a 2nd level spell. (This function will only work well, if the list is sorted by level). Pressing Enter while on the spell list will also show the spell description, the bar is currently on. * Spell List Window - Icons *************************** (The icons are described on order from left to right from top to bottom) The numbered icons on the top of the screen, will minimize the spell list to show only the spells of the specific level. So will the icons with "D", "S" & "In" on them - which will show only Psionic Devotions, Sciences & Information. The Next 5 icons on the left, work with marked spells. The first will show only marked spells. The second will reverse the markings. The third will unmark all spells. The 4th will save "Marking Index" to disk, and the 5th loads it. NEW FEATURE: "Marking Index" files store the index of the spells which are marked on the disk, so that it can be loaded for later use (such as making spellbooks). However, if the datafile is changed, the marking index does not, and you will get different results. This is only useful, if you use the same datafile. For easy use it is suggested that you use files with the "MRK" suffix. The next 3 icons will (from left to right) show only Wizard spells, Priest Prayers, and Psionic Powers. The Next 2 icons, will Sort the spell list. The first sorts it by level, while the second by spell type. The level sort will begin with cantrips, 1-10th level spells, devotions, sciences & info. The Sort by spell kind will first show Wizard Spells, then Priest Prayers & finally Psionic Powers. The "?" will show the readme file (i.e. what you are reading now...). The About button will show the About Page of this program. The next 3 icons on the top right of the window, will (from left to right) Save Spells - in text format. Print Spells Exit WinSpell The text icons in the left part of the window, correspond to search types. Pressing on each one of the icons, will bring a search box. Type in the string to be searched or choose it from the list of last searches and press OK or Cancel. You can use "&" character to separate two or more different strings to be searched for the same time. Name: Search the spelllist for those spells which contain the string searched in their name. Description: Search Spell Description for string. Description & Name: Search both Description & Spell Name for a string. School: Searches the Spell's wizard school or Psionic Discipline for a string. Sphere: Searches the Prayers for a priest sphere. Note that it is enough to type only part of the sphere's name. ("Animal" = "Ani"). The FULL button, returns the full spell list as loaded from the datafile (you can also press on the left most field in the status bar - where it shows how many spells in the current window out of those in the full list). ********STATUS BAR********** (from left to right) The Toggle icon on the left "Make Changes on Full List" corresponds to the "Show Only" icons (Top Left icon group) or Sort Icons (All the icons in the first row). When pressed the minimizing works on the full list, otherwise it works on the current list. For example, you can first press the "Show only Priest Prayers" icon and then press the "2" icon, to show only 2nd level priest prayers (this works that way, only when the button is up) - otherwise you will get the all the 2nd level spells. The next icon, is the Show Description toggle icon. When pressed the description field in the spell-list window will be visible. The icon with the "F" on it, will enable you to change the font in the description box. The First Status field gives information on the search type/sort type or Printing/saving. The next Status is a progress indicator, only active when the first status field is. The next field, shows how many Marked Spells are in the current list (left) from those in the entire spell list as loaded from the datafile (Right). The right-most field, shows how many Spells are in the current list (left) from those in the entire spell list as loaded from the datafile (Right). **************************** Pressing the "X" icon on the top right or ALT-F4 will exit the program. * Printing Window ***************** Checking the "Print with Description" checkbox, will print the list with full description & spell info. When Unchecked, the "Print Sorted" checkbox is visible. The "Print Sorted" checkbox, will cause the spell list to be printed first by spell type, and then by spell level, and finally by alphabetical order. Otherwise, the list will print as it appears in the spell list table. While the "Print with Description" checkbox" is checked, a "Lines between Spells" checkbox is visible. This enables you to determine how many empty lines appear between each spell. Pressing on any of the 4 buttons will start printing. Full - Print entire spell list as loaded from the datafile. Minimized - Print minimized list, as it appears in the spelllist table. Marked (only enabled when there are marked spells) - prints all marked spells in the spell list. Current - Prints the spell, the scroll bar is on. Pressing on the panel "Print" will bring you to the Save Window. Pressing Cancel will abort the Print, and return to the spell list. * Save Window ************* This window is similar to the printing menu, accept that it lets you select a file name to save the spelllist in (text format). Check the "Add to an existing File" checkbox, to append to a selected file. Use the default file - "Spell.Ind" or choose another by pressing the browse button. It is suggested that you use files with the same suffix "IND" for easy use. All other options are the same as in the Printing Window". Pressing on the "Save to File" panel, will bring you to the Printing Window. Pressing Cancel will abort the Save, and return to the spell list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Copyright ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The SpellView program is Copyrighted by Tal Barkey (Programming, Converting to Windows version & Spell Conversion) and Yaron Gur (Minor Programming).
